While the album may be aurally a success, one should offer the appropriate demerits for a rap album weak in content, especially in the year following a pop-rap crossover like “Alright”. Perhaps his view of women is camouflaged by his crooning, but Kanye even acknowledged the shortcomings of his womanizing lifestyle on TLOP (“FML”) and when Kanye is stepping off his throne to self-deprecate, you better know that it’s time to get up with the times and follow suit. One need only take in case “Child’s Play” to see that Drake is speaking of women as property to be collected and used for personal benefit. Furthermore, that Drake can’t get past his misogyny is kind of shocking to me. His rapping is even a little less clever, his flow less imaginative, than IYRTITL. His unwillingness to allow that there are other rappers even on his own level seems disingenuous. Now, 3 years later, he’s still reflecting on that, seemingly, same success. On NWTS, Drake was reflecting on his past success.

However, he hasn’t progressed in content, and there’s an argument to be made that he has REGRESSED. Drake’s rapping has got better, and sonically his flow sounds great and is still unique. The thing that holds him back, in my opinion, is his lyrical content. nowhere near it.I think the album sounds great. Heads always like to cite his personality and other shit like that as the reason they don't like kanye, but i've always felt the real reason is because he's just not a god of rapping. That's just natural though, everyone drops off after a couple albums and a few years. Technically though, I agree with tguy when he says his verses have been getting wacker and wacker.

Obviously though, we both know how many ghostwriters he's had so I don't know how to evaluate him there lol. I think Kanye's lyrics are spotty personally, I've found him to be both poignant and stupid, entertaining and prattish/corny. And then people say he deserves it because people like him for his production. Kanye is really good, no the the best at striking a balance between the type of shit artsy fartsy p4k dudes want and accessibility. When Kanye drops a 'gawdly' verse like Gorgeous as these dudes are telling you, it's pretty ho-hum from a mechanistic perspective. Real spit, even Wayne at his peak was a better rapper. You know in your heart of hearts the true reason you don't like Kanye, personality and emotional shit aside, is cause he's not a dyed in the wool gawd emcee and yet he has his spot in the pantheon and has been given one based on nebulous concepts of charisma by dudes that started listening to rap in 2003. Do we give him a pass because everything else about his projects tend to be dope (production, hooks, etc)? Or does he get the pass because normally his lyrics aren't as bad as Bound 2 usually they're average/not offensive to the ear. Also good lyricism and good songwriting aren't necessarily the same thing (see: Lupe). I think the fact that lyrics aren't everything plays a role.

Yeezus is full of questionable lyrics and rapping, yet it gets a pass. Yet if you listen to that song.Kanye is HORRIBLE on it, brehs lets be honest. When Yeezus came out I remember lots of people getting hype over Bound 2.

Yet most people don't judge Kanye on any level lyrically. I can enjoy Migos without thinking "this ain't D'Evils tho." But when guys like Drake, Cole, Kanye and others tell me they want to be judged on a higher level I give them what they want. I hold guys like Nas, Hov, Ghostface, Scarface, etc to a different level than I hold.Migos, for instance. Usually when someone puts their name in the ring as a "best rapper/GOAT/etc etc" it leads to people judging them on a different level. I guess you could call it the Kanye Double Standard.
